Full Circle

It’s been a couple of weeks since I last posted – honestly sorry. I do LOVE posting, sharing and giving insight into the world of stationery, but tis’ the season for wedding invitations – and the clients always come first! It’s also a season where we hear common questions and get tons of suggestions for posts – and don’t worry they are all on their way.

When it comes to the 2016 client list – this year is extra special because I had the honour of designing for my “very first clients” brother’s wedding. It’s amazing how relationships you make with your vendors can truly last lifetime. Meeting with then mother-of-the-bride and now mother-of-the-groom was magical. Six years later the family still remembered the quality of work, design style and exactly why they trusted me when my brand was just starting off. I am thankful to those first few clients everyday – if it wasn’t for them Vibrance would have never taken off.

On that note – to my fellow frendors (vendor friends) and especially those who are new to the industry still trying to make their mark, remember one thing, to build a memorable relationship with your client. No matter how big or small your part is on their special day TRUST me as a recent bride and fellow vendor they will remember how everything played out. Every little detail matters – and so does how you handle those details. Never think of a client as a single contract – it’s a lifetime relationship. When you make them feel comfortable and safe, they can trust you and your art. That’s the key.

Invitation: Love it or Leave it

Invitation ‘must-haves’ have changed significantly over the years, so what trends do we love and which do we want our customers to toss out the door? – check out our love it or leave it list!

  1. Leave it: Maps Remember real physical maps? Me neither. So let’s talk about those simple sketched maps of the closest intersection to your venue. When was the last one you used this map? I can’t remember the last time I pulled up a map on something other than my phone GPS. All the Auntys and Uncles are punching in your venue address to their GPS too so the verdict: let’s leave it!It’s unnecessary and generally takes away from your beautiful stationery. Also if you do another insert it just adds bulk to your invitations, adding to your print cost and postage too!

 

  1. LOVE it: Stamps Get your OWN personal address stamp! It’s not only budget friendly, it adds a personal touch and saves your hand from writing out your return address a million times on the invitation and RSVP envelopes!A stamp can be made in any font, style and used as long as you don’t move out. Inks are super cheap and available almost everywhere OR you could even get a self inking stamp! Plus it’s fun to sit and stamp while sipping wine and finishing up the last episode of the bachelor!It’s a keepsake for everything like your thank you cards or any future mail outs that could always use face lift! ead68957-c7e4-4566-9ddf-5ecc12a4d4b0

 

  1. Leave it: Too much information I’ve had brides and grooms who are falling into the pressure of adding too much information to their wedding invitation. Keep it simple, include the names of your parents if they are hosting – or just your names. It’s 2016 and it’s time invitations had a fresh start too. Think clean and concise!

 

  1. LOVE it: Seals  1170073_816911278431548_1406231641_nWhether you choose and adhesive wax seal or a full artwork seal; sealing your invitation adds an extra touch of luxury without breaking the bank.
    Wax seals are the ultimate luxury – they bring back a rich vibe and add a vintage touch. Plus they are adhesives now so you really have no work to do!Sticker seals are so budget friendly and can be made in any colour; it’s a wonderful spot to show off your monogram!

    And who says the seals will only be used once?! Order some in bulk and add them to your thank you cards and all your other mail outs (hello holiday cards!)

To connect or disconnect your wedding – that is the question!

With social media is taking over the world, we want to capture picjumbo.com_HNCK8349every moment it and share it with our circle of friends, family or even fans – especially the special moments of life. Social media is creeping levels of our lives so of course we see it making its way into weddings with phones and hashtags everywhere!

Several couples are having none of it and choosing to ask guest to disconnect and just enjoy the moment. And while I 100% agree your guests should be present, I don’t think it is necessary to collect everyone’s phones at the door.

We had a lot of people using our hashtag the day of our wedding but it was something quick – we created an atmosphere where people truly wanted to party and celebrate with us too – not just stay on their phones.

Want proof? The reception ended at 4:00 am! *mic drop*

So hashtag away – because we know you want to!

Here are reasons we loved our hashtag and recommend a connected wedding.

  1. We instantly saw our wedding! Hashtags are a wonderful thing! They are not only gaining popularity but are a playfully add to your day of stationery and let you reflect on your wedding day instantly.  Everything seemed to be happening so fast it reassured us that it wasn’t just a dream.
  2. Raw vs Professional. A big concern always here is “Well we hired a photographer or videographer.” Yes and I will say no one will be able to capture what professional can. Our wedding photos are pieces of art and our video looks like a high end Hollywood movie but your friends and family will be able to capture something different. It’s a bit more raw to say the least. For example – at the end of the night we had a dance off, and let’s just say my inner Beyonce came out in full Sasha Fierce style – this was at the end of the night though when it was just friends and family – no professionals so I loved watching it go down on Instagram and Snapchat (mainly because I wanted to see myself trump my new hubby in a dance off – who doesn’t)!
  3. You get to see your event in the eyes of your guests! And what’s more special than that?

2015

Happy Holidays all!

This year has been incredible. I can’t even begin to describe it. I also feel like I’d ramble to long, so I will try to keep it short and sweet!

2015 has been a HUGE year for us at Vibrance Designs. We opened the year with a fresh look, complete makeover and new perspective on our business. Taking you behind the scenes for the first time with this blog, not to forget bringing stationery advice, tips and tricks – and trust me that won’t stop. The readership on this blog always blows my mind (super thankful for all of you).  While keeping the personal hand-drawn touch to our work we also managed faster turnarounds and brought several new services like laser cut invitations, personal address stamps, wax seals, full colour canvas bags and more! Not to forget the expansion of our Etsy shop. I can’t say this was all easy, 2015 was the year of the hustle, I don’t think our team has ever worked this hard and trust me when I say it’s only getting better! XmasCards

As you know 2015 is a huge year for me personally too. I married the man of my dreams. I knew this new chapter in my life would teach me a lot but I never imagined learning this much. My business expanded and services tweaked the more I became a bride and sat on the other side of this industry. Nothing can help a vendor expand and grow as much as being it’s own client. I still am oozing advice, tips and tricks and trust me there will be more posts on my big day for all of you who have been asking for more. I only think it’s fair!

Lastly I want to thank you. Yes, you! Whether you’re a reader, client, supportive friend, frendor [vendor-friend], family or just someone who loves us – thank you for making 2015 the most amazing year yet. Without your support none of these new services or expansions would come to be.

Without you I wouldn’t be living my dream. Yes it’s a lot of hustle but you make it all worth it.

Florals, garden parties and art deco – oh my!

I want to start off this post by just saying sorry *cue Justin Bieber*. The weekly posts have gone bi-weekly and it’s just because married life + a business is a tricky combination I’m just learning to figure out – so thank you for bearing with me!

I’m taking a moment to thank a vendor who truly made my wedding flawless. Much of the compliments that we receive today is a direct result of this vendor’s work. Sara Baig from Sara Baig Designs and I were brought together by destiny. It was just meant to be. Her creativity, professionalism and honesty is what made my wedding beautiful.

Décor + Florals are a key component to your wedding – you need to find someone who understands you and your vision. For me, Sara was that person. We met with several decorators that took our style and spun it into their own creative web. This is exactly what we wanted. Although all of them were just as talented and AMAZING; with Sara I felt like she was crawling into my brain and literally picking up visions from there. A match made in heaven. Nothing was impossible and everything was executed perfectly.

I even had a moment to sit and chat with her before I walked down the aisle – and the best part – she was always excited, happy, and professional – which only makes you feel that much better as a bride.

12208537_1047451921952436_2003370071828084341_nFor me personally I wanted to be able to trust my decorator; be able to walk away and let them execute my idea. I knew with SBD I was going to have it all just by the way her team oozed creativity. I can’t thank her enough for making my “Indian Royalty at an English garden party ceremony; mixed in with elaborate florals and over the top art deco reception,” come to life. Sound like I’m taking about too many styles? Sara never thought so… and she fused it up with her own little twist!

My experience aside it was REALLY hard choosing just one decorator. Not only do I work with majority of them, I know what each of them is capable of – and trust me they ALL amaze me! Everyone is whimsically beautiful in their own way. So how do you choose just one?

  1. Set up a meeting and state your style/theme but let the decorator run the consultation and see what they come up with when you let them run wild! This will give you their best possible vision and execution of your wedding style.
  2. Think big and talk budget. I always tell my clients to tell me your dream invitation first then tell me your budget and I’ll make it happen; so do the same with your decorator. A good decorator will find ways to make it all happen without breaking your bank – now that doesn’t mean you can ask for champagne on a beer budget – let’s respect the work, creativity and hours that go into designing a wedding.
  3. Have fun. These are people you’re working with around the most stressful time in your life. Find ones you hit it off with. It will only make you that much happier and stress free the day of.

Dear younger self…

This post is a spin off a viral video I recently saw. It was light years ago in the online community but it’s something that I wanted to step back and think about before posting. In the society we live in, it is important to jump on something viral while it’s still on everyone’s mind but the context of this video needed more depth. After watching this I kept thinking what I would tell my younger self. I started my business at the age of 23. Many of my older friends thought this was super mature, amazing, and were proud of me – but there is a lot of anxiety, tears and confusion when you’re this young in the game.

So if I had the opportunity to speak to my younger self this is what I would tell her:

    1. Let them talk.Haters are going to hate, and there are going to be many! Some even disguised as your friends. Let them talk, let them try to crush your spirit. Focus on your goals; small goals and big goals. Prove them wrong with your actions. Don’t fight their words with words, fight their words with success.
    2. Competition should inspire you.  Don’t freak out if it seems like everyone is doing this now. Set yourself apart – most people already know your unique talent, but YOU need to know this weapon of yours. Befriend your competition and work together to make a healthy market – there are enough clients out there to feed everyone, so why not work with them to accomplish fair pricing for the whole industry.
    3. Be Selfish. In order to sell your work, you need to look the part and in order to look the part you NEED to make time for yourself. Just “you” time. Go to that extra yoga class, eat healthy do some meditation and it’s ok to get your nails done to brighten up your day. These are all things that will help you stay strong, powerful and make you a better person which benefits your business.
    4. Create a schedule.Family and friends support you and you need to make time for them. There is a misconception that successful people need to be working 24-7. This is not a hard worker – this is an inefficient worker. Sleep, work, eat, and make time for those who love you. You’ll never get that back. Your health and relationships are the number one priority. Without this you would have no business.
    5. Remind yourself why you started.Self – explanatory.

Creating a seating plan

The hardest thing you will ever do as a couple in your wedding planning process is create a seating chart. I’ve heard this from almost every client I’ve had in the past; but to be honest I never realized how hard it was until I had to make one myself.

Two families coming together for a big fat wedding is always fun, but the bigger the crowd the bigger the drama. There is so much to consider and rethink. I swear it took us about 8 hours. Thankfully it was a beautiful day – and we took (LOTS of) breaks to find music or practice our first dance. Why not?!

Anyways – we had a few different versions and some last min changes before print but we survived! 😉

So if you’re about to create a seating plan for your wedding here are my tips.

  1. Date night anyone? Remember to take breaks, have fun, listen to music – and dress up for the occasion (casual of course), looking at how gorgeous your future hubby/wifey could help relieve some stress! Who doesn’t like a little eye candy?!
  2. Less is more! Do not I repeat, DO NOT invite other people into this process! It’s stressful, you’re going to want to be blunt, honest and not deal with trying be the perfect daughter/son-in-law. So sorry MILs, SILs, BILs, FILs and any other “ILs” you cannot be invited to this party. I do advise for you to speak to your parents/siblings prior so you get their input.
  3. Set a deadline. Set your seating plan date, two weeks after your RSVP date, and CALL everyone that hasn’t RSVPed. Honestly in today’s world everyone SHOULD understand the importance of RSVPs. It’s not rude to call someone if they haven’t responded to you it is however rude to not RSVP and then show up with extended family. Thankfully this didn’t happen at our wedding but oh have I heard stories.
  4. Get the big wigs done first. There are certain people that you know play a more significant role in your life – so give them the best view in the house (this may not be right beside the stage which is sometimes the worst view).
  5. Use sticky notes. The first thing we did was draw a layout of the room on a large sheet of paper. We stuck families/couples/friends on one sticky note; this way they stayed together and it allowed us to easily move people around and see how many empty seats we had left. It is visual aid before the excel sheet list.
  6. Take a picture of your rough chart – trust me the sticky notes will fall and it will unnamedbe a perfect reference point in the palm of your hand.
  7. Use pencil – you will be erasing and adding info all the time.
  8. Have a few extra seats – you never know! There are always a few people that didn’t RSVP but come. Surprise! It’s always nice to have accommodations so that you’re not setting up last minute tables. Our seating chart clearly stated to check with the wedding planner if you couldn’t find your seat. Any empty seats were then filled with these guest. They may not have the choice to sit together but that’s what happens when you don’t RSVP!
  9. Load each name into a Google Doc Spreadsheet. Names in one column and the table number in the next. Google docs are also amazing – you can share the seating chart with everyone and see any updates they make as you go.
  10. ALWAYS stick to alphabetical order. Ok so this is something I know as a designer but this is a VERY common mistake that many couples make. Never, ever, ever, ever set your seating chart by table number. I could go on for AGES about this, but simply put; no one will know their table number walking into your wedding but they will (hopefully) know their name!

The night before

It’s funny no one really talks about the night before your wedding. Yes, helpful aunties and millions of previous brides told me “you need your beauty sleep,” but what really happens the night before isn’t always sleep. To be honest I don’t have a word for it.

Hosting “out-of-towners” meant it was a free for all; find a mattress anywhere available and claim it before someone else does! I claimed the one in my parents’ bedroom that night. It was the last night I would be just their daughter with no other role to play in life *cue the emotions.* Also my sisters and cousins were in my room prepping Mr. Fiance’s doom (doli games) so if I wanted sleep it would have to be elsewhere.

I laid, my last night as a single woman with my mind was racing. The dialogue went something like this…

  1. OMG I should totally do a blog post about the night before the wedding (literally started mind-writing that moment onward)
  2. I have such fabulous vendors, I’m so happy I don’t feel stressed at all and I can’t wait to see them… but wait if I’m not stressed then why am I not sleeping?! Should I be stressed?! ERR…
  3. I hope Mr. Fiancé is not going to be too hungover tomorrow.
  4. I wonder what he is doing right now?
  5. What are the girls (my sisters and cousins) doing in the other room?
  6. Why is my mom not sleeping yet, she needs her beauty sleep too, where is she?!
  7. I feel like I’m missing something or someone… but who?
  8. God, I can’t wait to see all the stationery. Please tell me it turned out perfect…
  9. Wait, will I see the stationery?!! Of course I will see the stationery… it’s going to be everywhere and the wedding planner will save it for me. Right!?
  10. Ok, sleep woman why are you not sleeping???

These thoughts were circling my mind the whole night. Then my parents finally came into the room (THANK YOU for turning on all the lights – ouch). They gave me a hug, we had a quick talk and then told me to sleep!

OK so I’m ready now, no more thoughts racing just sleep…

Nope, not yet, once my dad stopped snoring, my mom decided to for the first time in her life to join the snoring symphony. I wasn’t annoyed though. I had this odd feeling. I kept thinking I should go downstairs and sleep. So eventually after much thought I snuck out of the room, and slept on my couch alone.

Yes you read right – the couch. I’m not sure what time it was but I know it was late. My sisters came down and offered the room but I was way too comfortable. I wanted to stay here and honestly felt like coming down there all night. So they crept back upstairs while I laid comfortably.

Finally…

I’m not sure why this felt so right but I kept thinking about my grandmother who was no longer with us. I missed her a lot throughout my wedding. See, she would always sit on this couch – it was her seat and everyday routine and for some reason I just felt warm being there, thinking of her hugs. This is exactly what I had been seeking all night. No more thoughts racing through my head. I felt like she was there with me, which may sound cliche, but it’s exactly how I felt. I’m not sure if I even slept that night, but I know I woke up very relaxed, calm and ready to get married even though it was 4 am.

A year ago today(ish)…

A year ago today(ish) a new chapter opened in my life. Today(ish) is the day Mr. Boyfriend turned into Mr. Fiancé. It’s already been a year – which I can’t believe. A lot of you have been asking how he proposed and I’ve been delaying this post for a while, but why not share the details on the anniversary day?

I’m a big family person and love being in crowds, but I’m also a strong believer that proposal should be about the couple and only the couple; something small private and meaningful to those two people, because we all know everything else in a brown wedding is BIG! Mr. Fiancé proposal was a combination of everything that I love. It was about us, small, with a touch of family.

So how did it all go down?

Well, two days after my champagne birthday, Mr. Fiancé planned a date to celebrate. We started with dinner at Café Trattoria Nervosa in Yorkville. I had been DYING to go there for – what felt like –  years and on top of that somehow Jay Z and Beyoncé made it there before me – so now I just HAD to go. The food was delicious (total understatement), but Mr. Fiancé was so off. He is such a foodie and is so talkative, but this day I got nothing. We also never have our phones out when we are on a date, it’s not a rule, but it’s something we just don’t do, so I was shocked to see his phone out and him texting every few mins. To be honest – it was kind of annoying, this was my birthday and he is texting today out of all days?! Really?! Anyways I brushed it off and kept going.

We went to Summer’s Ice Cream right after and for some reason he was in a rush to go to this park. See we have always gone to parks for my birthdays to pop a mini bottle of champagne, so I still didn’t suspect anything, however I did think it was weird that my man was so determined to see a sunset. He’s not the type. So I half finished my ice cream and jet into the car so we can go to this random park and have some bubbly.

As we get there Mr. Fiancé still seems so off. We walk up (jump rocks – in heels might I add) to this incredible view of the entire cityscape.  I’ve never seen Toronto so beautiful from afar. We sat down and Mr. Fiancé kept ruining my moment with the 6 by complaining about his hands feeling sticky. So he asked me to get up so he can get the hand-sanitizer from the bag. But he didn’t pull out hand sanitizer, instead he had this little box.

Immediately everything started to make sense, this is also where I blank out. I don’t remember what he said, how he said it or anything I just remember seeing him down on one knee and hearing the words I love you… he slipped the ring on my finger and soon after the sky lite up with glitter. It was like all of Toronto had fireworks just for me. The perfect view.

We jumped in the car and that’s when I discovered it wasn’t over, we jet over to his parents house only to find all my friends and family there waiting to party. Oh and we partied – till 5 in the morning. It was only the beginning of the epic celebrations of #PujaSumit2015…

Married.

I’m back and I’m married!

Yes – you read right, all those months of planning, stressing, dancing and singing have come to an end. I still don’t feel like it’s over  – it all just felt like a dream; my perfect little dream. Everything was flawless – even though we had a few small bumps in the road, we smiled and just kept swimming. That being said, I know I’ve been kind of MIA on my blog – but trust me I have not forgotten about you all. There are a lot more wedding related posts coming your way very soon. I have a lot of advice and crazy stories to share from my experience so stay tuned – the next couple of weeks will be a fun ride through memory lane!
